In a study conducted by Abby King, a teacher from Stanford University, 200 participants over the age of 44 were enrolled.

These individuals were randomly assigned to different groups:

 

The Diet First Group – Those who underwent 4 months of nutrition counseling and then followed by 8 months of exercise and nutrition counseling.

 

The Exercise First Group – Those who underwent 4 months of improving their activity levels and then followed by 8 months of exercise and nutrition counseling.

 

The Combined Exercise And Diet Group – Those who underwent 12 months of exercise and nutrition counseling.

 

The Control Group – Those who underwent stress-reduction counseling for 12 months.

 

The exercise goal for all of the 4 groups was to increase their physical activity for 2 ½ hours each week. Then, the diet goal of the 4 groups was to have 5-9 servings of vegetables and fruits every day to reduce the saturated fats to 10% of the total calories consumed.

The results of the study are as follows:

  • The Combined Exercise And Diet Group were able to meet both the nutritional and activity goals.
