Exercising has long been proven to be an effective method of staying fit. And yet, when we talk about exercise it also follows the importance of a proper diet?
But have we ever wondered why exercise is always associated with a healthy diet? And why do experts agree that it will yield better results if the 2 are combined altogether?
Stick around as we are going to discuss more why exercise training is more effective when combined with a healthy diet in today’s fitness guide.
It Is Backed By Scientific Studies
In a study conducted by Abby King, a teacher from Stanford University, 200 participants over the age of 44 were enrolled.
And these people were specifically selected because all have a poor lifestyle in terms of proper diet and physical activity and were hoping to change their lifestyles for the better, but not necessarily to lose weight.
These individuals were randomly assigned to different groups:
The Diet First Group – Those who underwent 4 months of nutrition counseling and then followed by 8 months of exercise and nutrition counseling.
The Exercise First Group – Those who underwent 4 months of improving their activity levels and then followed by 8 months of exercise and nutrition counseling.
The Combined Exercise And Diet Group – Those who underwent 12 months of exercise and nutrition counseling.
The Control Group – Those who underwent stress-reduction counseling for 12 months.
The exercise goal for all of the 4 groups was to increase their physical activity for 2 ½ hours each week. Then, the diet goal of the 4 groups was to have 5-9 servings of vegetables and fruits every day to reduce the saturated fats to 10% of the total calories consumed.
The results of the study are as follows:
- The Control Group did not meet all the goals.
- The Diet First Group was able to meet their nutritional goals.
- The Exercise First Group was able to meet their activity goals.
- The Combined Exercise And Diet Group were able to meet both the nutritional and activity goals.
Based on this study, it is already determined that combining exercise training with proper diet does produce better results as opposed to exercising and dieting alone. So if you want to create a positive change in your life today, then you need to start making the right food choices while doing the kind of workout that you love.
